Editing note (1-9-22): the original file for this episode was incorrect.  It’s now been fixed.

Keagan and I decided to give you our ideas for the new year, to include some of our favorite episodes from 2021.  The state of the pandemic, the withdrawal from Afghanistan, and even a few positive thoughts are just a few things we have in store for you.  Enjoy!!!

National Bird – Drone warfare w/ Lisa Ling – Ep 108

Today, Keagan and I will be talking with Lisa Ling, a former intel analyst and whistleblower who worked with drones.  She’s the one of the subjects of National Bird, the award winning documentary on former drone unit members that included Daniel Hale (the handsome fella gracing our episode thumbnail today) and several other drone whistleblowers.  Please do take a listen to an episode of Primary Sources Podcast, as Lisa, Keagan, Cian Westmoreland, and host Chip Gibbons discuss drone warfare in depth, along with a breakdown of the horrific drone strike that punctuated the U.S. departure from Afghanistan.

Lisa joined the military in 1991, serving as an army medic and nurse before transferring to the Air National Guard (ANG). In the Guard, she became a communications technician, working on various types of electronic equipment including DCGS (Distributed Common Ground System; the U.S. Air Force defines DCGS as its “primary intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance collection, processing, exploitation, analysis and dissemination” system).

Besides her overseas deployments and prior years in the U.S. drone program, Lisa served with the 234th intelligence Squadron and 48th Intelligence Squadron at Beale Air Force Base from Oct 2007-Sep 2009. The 48th Intelligence Squadron provides communications and logistics maintenance for the DCGS.

She served more than six years on active duty and more than 15 years as both active and inactive National Guard.

She decided to speak out against the misuse of drones after traveling to Afghanistan and seeing for herself how what she participated in was not a war on terror, but a war of terror. She has spoken out against armed drones killing with inaccurate data, and the program’s immense unchecked power around the world, writing for (and sometimes being featured in) the Los Angeles Times, the Daily Beast, on Cyberwar—Viceland, and ABC Australia.

Lisa is one of three protagonists from the U.S. drone program featured in the documentary film National Bird, directed by Sonia Kennebeck.

2021 Foreign Policy Predictions – Ep 91

KBOO listeners:Click here to finish episode.

(1-23-21: Our podcast hosting server had some issues yesterday and early this morning.  There’s still issues streaming the episode through iTunes, but it will now download and can be heard streaming on our website.  Apologies for the inconvenience.)

As the United States embraces a new year and a new president (and his Obama era dream team), we felt inclined to discuss our predictions for American foreign policy for 2021, including Africa, the Greater Middle East to include Iraq, Afghanistan, and Yemen, and the shift to great power competition including Russia and China.

This episode references a brand new article out today from Danny at TomDispatch, which covers much of the topics in this episode and a few we didn’t cover.  Please read and share!!

Two post 9/11 torture programs w/ Dr. Jeffrey Kaye – Ep 43

Dr. Jeffrey Kaye returns for a new discussion on the existence of two torture programs during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.  The new program (to us at least) is quite different from the program which used so called “experimental interrogation techniques” like water boarding and relied on more simple, but still quite horrifying, techniques like using stress positions or confusing a prisoner’s sense of time of day.  The new program will be referred to as Program B, while the experimental one already widely known, will be referred to as Program A.

The hard path of resistance – conscientious objectors panel – Ep 35

Read

Conscientious objection is a time-honored part of military service.  After reading about its history a bit, I decided we needed a closer look from the only people who can tell it right from the horse’s mouth: objectors themselves.  Here, I chat with three of them, all with different backgrounds, but one overwhelming consensus among them: military service was unacceptable to their conscience. Here, we find out a few clues why.

Clifton Hicks enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of seventeen and served as an M1 Abrams tank crewman with C Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Division in Iraq 2003-2004. In 2005 he was honorably discharged as a conscientious objector. He went on to earn a degree in anthropology from Appalachian State University and currently works as a musician and music teacher.

Rosa del Duca is a writer and musician. She grew up a tomboy in rural Montana, where she joined the Army National Guard when she was seventeen. During her six-year contract, she became not only a conscientious objector, but a feminist and unlikely rebel.  That tumultuous time is the focus of her memoir, Breaking Cadence: One Woman’s War Against the War, forthcoming from Ooligan Press in May, 2019, and her companion podcast, Breaking Cadence: Insights From a Modern-Day Conscientious Objector.

Jorge Javier (JJ) Rodriguez is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where his time spent as a cadet solidified his stance as a conscientious objector.  He is now stationed at Fort Campbell, KY, where he is going through the process of the Army’s conscientious objector program. For his full bio and a better look at his situation, click here.

Ramon Mejia enlisted in the Marine Corps out of economic necessity. He served in Supply Ops. and participated in the initial invasion of and deployment to Dhi Qar Province, Iraq in 2003. As a result of his experience in Iraq, he converted to Islam in 2008. He has been an active organizer in countering local manifestations of hate and racism by neo-Nazis and paramilitary groups in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Ramon is a Social Studies teacher and one of the founding organizers of #VetsVsHate, a national veteran grassroots initiative pushing back against racism and bigotry. He was recently recognized as part of the ‘MPower 100–Muslim Social Justice Leaders Building Power Across the United States.
