Drone strike murders by Delta Force – Ep 110

Kyle Anzelone from Conflicts of Interest stops by to discuss a new report from the New York Times discussing how Delta Force members, working as part of a drone strike cell during the ISIS offensive in Syria, caused so many civilian casualties that their fellow strike cell compatriots (CIA, USAF Intelligence, State Dept) turned them in.  We also take a minute to discuss Conflicts of Interest.  Enjoy!!!

Kyle Anzalone is news editor of the Libertarian Institute, assistant editor of Antiwar.com and co-host of Conflicts of Interest with Will Porter.

National Bird – Drone warfare w/ Lisa Ling – Ep 108

Today, Keagan and I will be talking with Lisa Ling, a former intel analyst and whistleblower who worked with drones.  She’s the one of the subjects of National Bird, the award winning documentary on former drone unit members that included Daniel Hale (the handsome fella gracing our episode thumbnail today) and several other drone whistleblowers.  Please do take a listen to an episode of Primary Sources Podcast, as Lisa, Keagan, Cian Westmoreland, and host Chip Gibbons discuss drone warfare in depth, along with a breakdown of the horrific drone strike that punctuated the U.S. departure from Afghanistan.

Lisa joined the military in 1991, serving as an army medic and nurse before transferring to the Air National Guard (ANG). In the Guard, she became a communications technician, working on various types of electronic equipment including DCGS (Distributed Common Ground System; the U.S. Air Force defines DCGS as its “primary intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance collection, processing, exploitation, analysis and dissemination” system).

Besides her overseas deployments and prior years in the U.S. drone program, Lisa served with the 234th intelligence Squadron and 48th Intelligence Squadron at Beale Air Force Base from Oct 2007-Sep 2009. The 48th Intelligence Squadron provides communications and logistics maintenance for the DCGS.

She served more than six years on active duty and more than 15 years as both active and inactive National Guard.

She decided to speak out against the misuse of drones after traveling to Afghanistan and seeing for herself how what she participated in was not a war on terror, but a war of terror. She has spoken out against armed drones killing with inaccurate data, and the program’s immense unchecked power around the world, writing for (and sometimes being featured in) the Los Angeles Times, the Daily Beast, on Cyberwar—Viceland, and ABC Australia.

Lisa is one of three protagonists from the U.S. drone program featured in the documentary film National Bird, directed by Sonia Kennebeck.

N.B. Hankes stops by the podcast to discuss his new book, “Waking Up On the Appalachian Trail: A Story of War, Brotherhood, and the Pursuit of Truth.”  We discuss Nate’s time as a drone operator in Iraq, his long trek on the Appalachian Trail with his brother, and ridding one’s self of the American military hero mythos.  If you want to buy a copy of his book, go to his site (linked above) and use the code FORTRESS to get free shipping.  Enjoy!

N. B. The assassination of Qassem Suleimani – Ep 56

This is a different sort of episode from what you’ve come to expect from us.  The three of us are in utter shock at the brazen, cowardly, illegal assassination of IRGC General Qassem Suleimani and the potential aftershocks to the Middle East as a whole.  The U.S. is the closest it has ever been to all out war with Iran. This should scare you; it terrifies the fuck out of us.

And with that in mind, we want to remind our listeners, especially those who are still in the military, of one very important thing: you don’t have to do this.  You don’t have to deploy to the Middle East. You don’t have to sacrifice your own safety, nor those of your fellow troops, nor certainly the safety of the people of the Middle East (especially Iraqis and Iranians.)  If you need an ear, email us anytime. You can also call us, leave a message, and we will call you back. You also can contact the fine folks at the GI Rights Hotline. Their information is below.

The GI Rights Hotline provides accurate, helpful counseling and information on military discharges, AWOL and UA, and GI Rights:

Why should I call 1-877-447-4487?

The GI Rights Network is a private, nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that answers thousands of calls from military personnel and their families. There are many reasons for these calls. You can call us for help with any of the following issues:

What will happen when I call?

  • You will be helped by a trained GI counselor.
  • If a counselor is unavailable, you may leave a voice message, or contact the Hotline by eMail or text message.

Our trained civilian counselors are ready to help you sort out your options.

Call now — the call and the service are free and confidential.

Death from above and apathy from below – US drone warfare – Ep 17

Drones are quickly becoming a crucial part of many US military and government toolboxes in order to deal with specialized situations.  This morning, I saw that the FAA granted a special exemption to allow drones to help fight massive forest fires happening in Idaho. Police departments are using drones for building searches and crisis situations at a minimum.  And our military uses drones for a wide variety of functions, not the least of which is to be used as an instrument of assassination.

Something important to remember here is that not all drones are armed.  One surveillance drone, Global Hawk, surveillance drone, has a 150 ft wingspan and is half the size of a 747.  It can fly at much higher altitudes and can fly longer than most armed drones. The kinds of intelligence it gathers are certainly magnitudes of order above armed drones or small surveillance drones.  Do we believe it’s acceptable to share this kind of intelligence with our foreign partners? Should the info a Global Hawk gets from surveilling Yemen be given to the SA government for us in their proxy war against the Houthti’s?  Should surveillance of Syria and Palestine be given to Israel? These are important questions in this discussion.

Danny and I bring you our breakdown of drone warfare.  We’ll be taking a break for the next few weeks from the podcast to attend the About Face – Veterans Against the War convention and create some new content to share with you.  See you soon!!
