National Bird – Drone warfare w/ Lisa Ling – Ep 108

Today, Keagan and I will be talking with Lisa Ling, a former intel analyst and whistleblower who worked with drones.  She’s the one of the subjects of National Bird, the award winning documentary on former drone unit members that included Daniel Hale (the handsome fella gracing our episode thumbnail today) and several other drone whistleblowers.  Please do take a listen to an episode of Primary Sources Podcast, as Lisa, Keagan, Cian Westmoreland, and host Chip Gibbons discuss drone warfare in depth, along with a breakdown of the horrific drone strike that punctuated the U.S. departure from Afghanistan.

Lisa joined the military in 1991, serving as an army medic and nurse before transferring to the Air National Guard (ANG). In the Guard, she became a communications technician, working on various types of electronic equipment including DCGS (Distributed Common Ground System; the U.S. Air Force defines DCGS as its “primary intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance collection, processing, exploitation, analysis and dissemination” system).

Besides her overseas deployments and prior years in the U.S. drone program, Lisa served with the 234th intelligence Squadron and 48th Intelligence Squadron at Beale Air Force Base from Oct 2007-Sep 2009. The 48th Intelligence Squadron provides communications and logistics maintenance for the DCGS.

She served more than six years on active duty and more than 15 years as both active and inactive National Guard.

She decided to speak out against the misuse of drones after traveling to Afghanistan and seeing for herself how what she participated in was not a war on terror, but a war of terror. She has spoken out against armed drones killing with inaccurate data, and the program’s immense unchecked power around the world, writing for (and sometimes being featured in) the Los Angeles Times, the Daily Beast, on Cyberwar—Viceland, and ABC Australia.

Lisa is one of three protagonists from the U.S. drone program featured in the documentary film National Bird, directed by Sonia Kennebeck.

2021 Foreign Policy Predictions – Ep 91

KBOO listeners:Click here to finish episode.

(1-23-21: Our podcast hosting server had some issues yesterday and early this morning.  There’s still issues streaming the episode through iTunes, but it will now download and can be heard streaming on our website.  Apologies for the inconvenience.)

As the United States embraces a new year and a new president (and his Obama era dream team), we felt inclined to discuss our predictions for American foreign policy for 2021, including Africa, the Greater Middle East to include Iraq, Afghanistan, and Yemen, and the shift to great power competition including Russia and China.

This episode references a brand new article out today from Danny at TomDispatch, which covers much of the topics in this episode and a few we didn’t cover.  Please read and share!!

Assange verdict live stream (audio only) – Ep 90

On January 4th, we hosted a live stream to discuss the verdict of Julian Assange’s extradition hearing (he’s not being extradited for the time being) and the ramifications of the decision, both to Julian and to freedom of speech as a whole.  Steve Poikonen, host of Slow News Day and co-host of the Free Assange online vigil series, along with a few of Steve’s pals, joins us to discuss the verdict and the potential impact to American journalism.

Memorial Day live stream (audio only) – Ep 69

Memorial Day has become a holiday that is farcical and cheap; while it may honor deceased veterans in a NFL playoff game sort of way, what does all the fanfare and bright lights mean?  How do discounts at Home Depot or free meals at Applebee’s honor veterans?  If our nation is destined to continue regime change at its current pace, does the president leaving a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, among the graves of thousands of fallen troops, really dignify the sacrifices present there?

For Memorial Day this year, we decided to do something different.  On Memorial Day, we held a panel as a live episode of the podcast.  We invited some of the loudest voices among the anti-war movement to share with you our thoughts on service and sacrifice, here in 2020.  If you’re looking to hear a particular participant, click the time link next to their name and it’ll take you right there in the episode.

Larry Wilkerson – Ep 67

Read

Powerful.  That’s how I’d describe today’s episode.  A deep dive into the mind of COL(R) Larry Wilkerson, his career as a U.S. Army officer to include combat in Vietnam, his close professional relationship with Colin Powell, his time at the State Department during the Bush II era, his thoughts on various conflicts to include Iraq and Syria, and his thoughts on the murder of George Floyd amist the COVID-19 era.

Lawrence Wilkerson’s last positions in government were as Secretary of State Colin Powell’s Chief of Staff (2002-05), Associate Director of the State Department’s Policy Planning staff under the directorship of Ambassador Richard N. Haass, and member of that staff responsible for East Asia and the Pacific, political-military and legislative affairs (2001-02).

Before serving at the State Department, Wilkerson served 31 years in the U.S. Army. During that time, he was a member of the faculty of the U.S. Naval War College (1987 to 1989), Special Assistant to General Powell when he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-93), and Director and Deputy Director of the U.S. Marine Corps War College at Quantico, Virginia (1993-97).

Wilkerson retired from active service in 1997 as a colonel, and began work as an advisor to General Powell. He has also taught national security affairs in the Honors Program at the George Washington University.  He is currently working on a book about the first George W. Bush administration.

It will stream to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. We’ll answer questions live and play voicemail messages from our listeners.  The guest list includes Matthew Hoh, Clifton Hicks, Jovanni Reyes, Brittany DeBarros, Ryan Keen, and of course, myself, Danny, and Keagan, to possibly include a few others. Hope you all can join us. Links for the event will get emailed and shared a few days beforehand.
