Two post 9/11 torture programs w/ Dr. Jeffrey Kaye – Ep 43

Dr. Jeffrey Kaye returns for a new discussion on the existence of two torture programs during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.  The new program (to us at least) is quite different from the program which used so called “experimental interrogation techniques” like water boarding and relied on more simple, but still quite horrifying, techniques like using stress positions or confusing a prisoner’s sense of time of day.  The new program will be referred to as Program B, while the experimental one already widely known, will be referred to as Program A.

The hard path of resistance – conscientious objectors panel – Ep 35

Read

Conscientious objection is a time-honored part of military service.  After reading about its history a bit, I decided we needed a closer look from the only people who can tell it right from the horse’s mouth: objectors themselves.  Here, I chat with three of them, all with different backgrounds, but one overwhelming consensus among them: military service was unacceptable to their conscience. Here, we find out a few clues why.

Clifton Hicks enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of seventeen and served as an M1 Abrams tank crewman with C Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Division in Iraq 2003-2004. In 2005 he was honorably discharged as a conscientious objector. He went on to earn a degree in anthropology from Appalachian State University and currently works as a musician and music teacher.

Rosa del Duca is a writer and musician. She grew up a tomboy in rural Montana, where she joined the Army National Guard when she was seventeen. During her six-year contract, she became not only a conscientious objector, but a feminist and unlikely rebel.  That tumultuous time is the focus of her memoir, Breaking Cadence: One Woman’s War Against the War, forthcoming from Ooligan Press in May, 2019, and her companion podcast, Breaking Cadence: Insights From a Modern-Day Conscientious Objector.

Jorge Javier (JJ) Rodriguez is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where his time spent as a cadet solidified his stance as a conscientious objector.  He is now stationed at Fort Campbell, KY, where he is going through the process of the Army’s conscientious objector program. For his full bio and a better look at his situation, click here.

Ramon Mejia enlisted in the Marine Corps out of economic necessity. He served in Supply Ops. and participated in the initial invasion of and deployment to Dhi Qar Province, Iraq in 2003. As a result of his experience in Iraq, he converted to Islam in 2008. He has been an active organizer in countering local manifestations of hate and racism by neo-Nazis and paramilitary groups in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Ramon is a Social Studies teacher and one of the founding organizers of #VetsVsHate, a national veteran grassroots initiative pushing back against racism and bigotry. He was recently recognized as part of the ‘MPower 100–Muslim Social Justice Leaders Building Power Across the United States.

Hawk on terror and dove on regime change – what could go wrong? – Ep 34

Read

Today is a politics day at Fortress On A Hill.  The guys and I seldom spend THIS much time discussing the political background of anyone, much else future Democratic presidential candidates.    Here, we dig into Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren, and Tulsi Gabbbard; we’ll cover others like Kamala Harris in a later episode. We will continue to do this as more candidates announce; the compare and contrast of the group is quite important for understanding how American foreign policy might play out in a future Democratic administration.

Nothing to see here…just take your war criticism and get out! – Ep 26

Going through the official government narratives of conflict, there’s a lot of learn, even knowing that you’re dealing with a certain percentage of deliberate obfuscation and outright falsehoods.  It’s important to discuss what the war planners of a given conflict knew, at what point they knew it, and how they acted on that information. A new Army report with heavy criticism over operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom will be released soon and while I expect to get irate while reading it, I also expect to learn a lot that I didn’t already know.  We’ll do a much longer episode on the full report when it’s released. Enjoy!

‘Bad paper’ discharges with Tyson Manker – Ep 11.0

Being honorably discharged from the military is the reality most veterans face.  They receive all benefits from their time in service and help from the VA with healthcare and other significant issues.  To me, it’s always been a given.  I served my country and for that, I receive these services. But what if you had to leave the military and receive NONE of those benefits?  This would make sense if someone was court martialed or committed a high offense in some way during their service, but how about someone who doesn’t? Would it make sense to give a lifetime of punishment to a person who commits a minor offense and yet loses all access to assistance from the VA and otherwise?

Here is my interview with Tyson Manker, Marine Corps combat veteran who participated in the invasion of Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and following his deployment, he smoked weed in an attempt to deal with PTSD symptoms that he didn’t even recognize yet.  In return, he was chaptered from the USMC and received a less than honorable discharge. Here is his story.
