Hawk on terror and dove on regime change – what could go wrong? – Ep 34

Read

Today is a politics day at Fortress On A Hill.  The guys and I seldom spend THIS much time discussing the political background of anyone, much else future Democratic presidential candidates.    Here, we dig into Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren, and Tulsi Gabbbard; we’ll cover others like Kamala Harris in a later episode. We will continue to do this as more candidates announce; the compare and contrast of the group is quite important for understanding how American foreign policy might play out in a future Democratic administration.

Death from above and apathy from below – US drone warfare – Ep 17

Drones are quickly becoming a crucial part of many US military and government toolboxes in order to deal with specialized situations.  This morning, I saw that the FAA granted a special exemption to allow drones to help fight massive forest fires happening in Idaho. Police departments are using drones for building searches and crisis situations at a minimum.  And our military uses drones for a wide variety of functions, not the least of which is to be used as an instrument of assassination.

Something important to remember here is that not all drones are armed.  One surveillance drone, Global Hawk, surveillance drone, has a 150 ft wingspan and is half the size of a 747.  It can fly at much higher altitudes and can fly longer than most armed drones. The kinds of intelligence it gathers are certainly magnitudes of order above armed drones or small surveillance drones.  Do we believe it’s acceptable to share this kind of intelligence with our foreign partners? Should the info a Global Hawk gets from surveilling Yemen be given to the SA government for us in their proxy war against the Houthti’s?  Should surveillance of Syria and Palestine be given to Israel? These are important questions in this discussion.

Danny and I bring you our breakdown of drone warfare.  We’ll be taking a break for the next few weeks from the podcast to attend the About Face – Veterans Against the War convention and create some new content to share with you.  See you soon!!

America the beautiful…and ugly “Reality” – Ep 16.0

Even with the usual drowning of military news topics in circulation today, this last week has raised the bar considerably on how much horrible news can be crammed in such a small amount of time.  Yemen, already awash in the humanitarian disasters caused by the Saudi / UAE / US campaign to remove the Houthis, found a new low this week as Yemeni citizens fled the new drive to retake the both the port and airport in Hodeidah.  The Supreme Court demonstrates its very pointed lack of democratic principles as it voted down cases on both labor rights and President Trump’s Muslim ban, to only name a few. And poor Reality Winner receives her sentence for whistleblowing, to the tune of 63 months in federal prison and 3 years supervised release.

Grab a pillow case or a paper bag to scream into, because I think you’ll need it.

Interview with Iona Craig of The Intercept – Part 1 – Ep 8.5

Journalism commitment comes in a variety of forms.  I’ve spent a lot of my time searching and reading news from all kinds of sources.  And as such, I read a lot of the same journalists, sometimes even at different outlets.  Glenn Greenwald would be a good example, as he appears on various outlets to share his work.  One day, you might be reading Glenn at the Intercept, and the next he might be appearing on Fox News.  The point is that he doesn’t seem to have limits on what he will do or what news outlet he might appear on; he simply wants the truth to be out there.  Danny is another great example of this. Danny writes for a variety of outlets, but doesn’t always share the IDENTICAL political affiliation that the outlet serves.  Danny’s goal is to have as many people read his work, regardless of who they are or their political affiliation.

Iona Craig is a journalist with a similar commitment, but in a very different direction.  Yemen.  She studies, writes about, and has even lived for years in Yemen.  I’ve never seen a journalist with that kind of commitment to her craft.  When I was a soldier years ago, I came to the realization on deployment that our constant changing of units (a normal part of deployments and Army life in general) wouldn’t allow us to make lasting relationships with the people in Iraq, and without trust, real change can’t be made.  And secondary to that, the people you visit, like the people I met in Iraq and the friends and contacts Iona has made in Yemen, deserve to create trust with visitors to their country.

Thanks to Iona for joining us on Fortress On A Hill.  Here is Part 1 of our discussion, along with a couple headlines that Iona was kind enough to sit in on and give us her perspective.  Enjoy!!!

00:30 – Danny discusses the emerging “threat” of China

16:45 – Ousting of Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State, replaced by Mike Pompeo

25:25 – Interview with Iona Craig of the Intercept – Part 1

[bctt tweet=”Meanwhile on the humaitarian side, obviously things have gotten dramatically worse. Deaths in the conflict now, although the UN stopped counting at the end of 2016 when it reached 10k in terms of children. Estimates are in the 50k for non-combat deaths, just purely on the humaitarian side this last year. What’s that mean for things on the ground? It means every time I go back there, I see more and more children dying of starvation, in medical centers across the country. Less than 50% of the country’s hospital are operational. Of a population of 27 million people, approximately 22 million need of humanitarian assistance. – Iona Craig on the crisis in Yemen” username=”fortressonahill”]
