Today, Danny and I present part 2 of our sitdown with Scott Horton, host of Anti-War Radio on KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles, which is also known by its podcast name, the Scott Horton Show.  Scott has hosted Anti-War Radio since 2003 and has done several thousand interviews with war correspondents of all stripes.  His book, “Fool’s Errand: Time to end the war in Afghanistan” is an amazing collection on the history of war in Afghanistan, how presidential decisions from Carter to Trump have destroyed the greater Middle East, and how the American people were deceived by the leaders about both the premise of the war and the history of it, now just past its 17th anniversary.  Scott is also managing director of the Libertarian Institute at  LibertarianInstitute.org and editorial director of Anti-war.com, where both Danny and myself, but mostly Danny, have published pieces on the American war state.  The man has an amazing mind and recalls even the tiniest of details about his research and reporting on Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, and so forth.  Please do listen to his show on 90.7 if you’re in the Los Angeles area. We’re back!!!  After a few sweltering summer weeks, Danny and I are back.  We’ve got a lot of stuff coming up!!!  Next Friday, we have our episode on moral injury, including the Warax, Tyson Manker, and Chaplain Josh Morris.  It’s an intense but needed discussion on today’s troops dealing with the moral leanings of their decisions and the decisions of our government.  Next, we and Roomofrequirement, a political podcast, will be doing a joint episode with their hosts.  Veterans and civilians need to spend more time face to face, discussing issues important to the military and important to the country, so this is us doing our teen tiny part.  And last on the upcoming stuff for this week, but certainly not least, our next major breakdown will be released on September 6 when we’ll discuss September 11, 2001.  Its history, its myths, its bearing on our national security state, and how it affected us personally.

On the hot seat for today, first we discuss the recent bombing in Yemen, which killed a multitude of small children.   Next, we discuss recent developments with the Pentagon, as it continues to stonewall reporters asking basic defense questions and even retaliate against some of them for what it considers to be unfavorable headlines.  Then, we discuss a terrifying development involving TomDispatch and the Department of Defense.  Lastly, Danny gives us the scoop on his time at the About Face convention.

Drones are quickly becoming a crucial part of many US military and government toolboxes in order to deal with specialized situations.  This morning, I saw that the FAA granted a special exemption to allow drones to help fight massive forest fires happening in Idaho. Police departments are using drones for building searches and crisis situations at a minimum.  And our military uses drones for a wide variety of functions, not the least of which is to be used as an instrument of assassination.

Something important to remember here is that not all drones are armed.  One surveillance drone, Global Hawk, surveillance drone, has a 150 ft wingspan and is half the size of a 747.  It can fly at much higher altitudes and can fly longer than most armed drones. The kinds of intelligence it gathers are certainly magnitudes of order above armed drones or small surveillance drones.  Do we believe it’s acceptable to share this kind of intelligence with our foreign partners? Should the info a Global Hawk gets from surveilling Yemen be given to the SA government for us in their proxy war against the Houthti’s?  Should surveillance of Syria and Palestine be given to Israel? These are important questions in this discussion.

Even with the usual drowning of military news topics in circulation today, this last week has raised the bar considerably on how much horrible news can be crammed in such a small amount of time.  Yemen, already awash in the humanitarian disasters caused by the Saudi / UAE / US campaign to remove the Houthis, found a new low this week as Yemeni citizens fled the new drive to retake the both the port and airport in Hodeidah.  The Supreme Court demonstrates its very pointed lack of democratic principles as it voted down cases on both labor rights and President Trump’s Muslim ban, to only name a few. And poor Reality Winner receives her sentence for whistleblowing, to the tune of 63 months in federal prison and 3 years supervised release.

Grab a pillow case or a paper bag to scream into, because I think you’ll need it.

We bring you part 2 of our sitdown with Keagan Miller.  Keagan is a former CTT (Cryptologic Technical Technician) who served in the Navy from 2009-13. He worked at NSA Georgia in support of 5th fleet and intelligence agency operations in North Africa and Middle East such as the Libya mission in 2011, the anti-piracy mission in Somalia, as well as other intelligence support given to operations in Yemen and Syria. Since getting out of the military he has been working with homeless veterans in the non profit and at the county level as a Case manager for Supportive Housing programs.

This excellent, slim volume describes the concerted effort by foreign powers and regional players (like the Saudis) to destroy Yemen, control its resources, and force its citizens to become pawns of the global capitalist order.  This book demonstrates how this process is an old one, dating back to at least 1962 and Yemen’s first civil war.  In that sense, the current U.S.-backed, Saudi terror bombing of Yemen is but one chapter in a sad, continuous tale.

And, The Vanquished: Why the First World War Failed to End

This work shows how peace didn’t actually take hold on 11 November 1918 (the original Armistice or Memorial Day), at least not beyond France and the Western Front.  Rather, ethno-sectarian conflict broke out across the Middle East, the Balkans, and Eastern Europe.  Furthermore, this book shows how the artificial decisions and boundaries drawn by the Great Powers set up many of the world’s worst conflicts today.  As the author demonstrates, much of the world’s tumult stems from WWI or the decisions made in its aftermath.
